Our students are stuck in the middle--that awkward stage of not being a little elementary kid, but they're not high school teenagers yet, either. You know the spot--the dreaded middle school years. Many of them have tangled their minds up with the belief they're just "no good" with academics!
Warriors are proud to come from a diverse background.
Their struggles are real: 30% of our population is receiving special services, more come from a bilingual household, and over half are living in low-income or poverty. Many are living in homes where the adults in their lives have never attended college, and the possibility of them attending college seems like a pipe dream. They struggle with basic needs, and yet they still come to school every day--often with a smile on their faces--eager and ready to keep working towards their goals.
My Project
Students love working with colors. In math, it's important to keep track of details. We often use colored pencils and crayons to highlight connecting details in a story problem or mathematical problem. When working with ratios, we also use colors to help us track the two related quantities as we graph or model. We like to use markers that are bright and POP when we create our summary posters that display our learning.
Color helps brighten mathematical learning.
It helps all students--not just special education and/or English language learners--track the mutable quantities. And for middle schoolers who are still learning their way around algebraic concepts, being able to isolate variables, combine like terms, and calculate with negative numbers... colors cand be just the right strategy to help their brains click.
