Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited to be at school and are eager to learn. They are from the small rural community of Dublin, Texas, which is known for its agriculture and provides many hard-working families with jobs. About 85 percent of my students are from low-income families. We have a high population of ESL students, and many of their families do not speak English at home. Therefore, their vocabulary is limited. Despite the language barrier, our students work hard and have made great gains in their reading. Our school provides a safe and positive environment that encourages students to do their best and develop a love for reading. The elementary school has about 400 students from PreK to 3rd grade.
My Project
We use Chromebooks every day in the classroom. Currently, the students use a class set of earbuds. The earbuds are often uncomfortable and collect earwax that must be cleaned after each use. These new headphones would be much more comfortable with the padding around the ears and will not pose an earwax problem! We use colored pencils nearly every day as well. My students show their strategies in color while reading articles for comprehension. The color the students use helps them to locate important information and prove their answers. Since my partner and I teach reading to all of the third graders, we go through many colored pencils throughout the year.
Handwriting is an important skill that has been overlooked in this fast-paced high stakes testing era.
Many of my third graders lack the ability to hold their pencils correctly and make their letters incorrectly. The lined handwriting paper and pencil grips will help them continue to learn to write properly without a constant struggle. The colored overlays are always a great tool to have available for some of my students with reading difficulties. It really seems to help them focus on the words better; therefore increasing their fluency and comprehension.
