Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade students come to class each day with a desire to learn. Providing them with high-quality texts and stories that keep them interested and focused while still learning, is difficult. I have the privilege to teach students from diverse backgrounds.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
My students are English Language Learners. My students are eager to learn but lack the foundational skills in the areas of reading and writing. Background vocabulary is one of the areas that is impacting their reading comprehension skills.
My Project
Students will read everyday non-fiction and fiction passages. They will practice close reading by rereading the text. At the same time they will underline the text features or story elements. Students will use a different color for each text feature or story element identified.
Students will answer reading comprehension questions using crayons or markers to underline the text that provides the evidence for their answers.
Each question will have an assigned color.
Underlining the evidence in different colors will allow students to identify each story element separately without confusion. Example: underline the characters with red crayon, and the setting with green crayon.
