Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high needs school, where close to 75% of students receive free or reduced price lunch, we face daily challenges that other schools, fortunately, don't have to face. Foster care, violence, incarcerated parents; these are just some of the issues my students deal with. However, with all these challenges, my students are determined to be successful in school and in life.
Ambitious, resilient and hardworking are just a few of the words I would use to describe my students.
My students do not have access to a lot at home and I am determined to provide them with a fun learning environment in my classroom.
My Project
I often ask my students to create colorful charts and posters to demonstrate and show off what they have learned. My students love expressing their ideas in a creative way. My students enjoy making posters about ancient civilizations and are able to show through their words and through pictures what it was like to live there, all about the religion, government and daily life of the ancient people we read about. Every chance I get I try to assess learning in non traditional test taking ways. Unfortunately, markers dry out, crayons break and colored pencils can only be sharped and used so often. I find myself replacing these consumable materials every few years. Being able to provide opportunities for my middle schools to learn and show their knowledge in a creative way is important to me.
