Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our Title I school provides a positive, safe learning environment for many students living in low-income households and experiencing poverty. Many of our children come to school without having their needs met at home, so coming to school can be a breath of fresh air. My students experience moderate-severe cognitive delays, and require a self-contained special education setting.

Despite the challenges my students face daily, they come to school with bright smiles and excited to learn new things!

These children deserve all the resources beneficial to their success, both academically and functionally. They are full of curiosity, determination, and joy!

My Project

In my classroom, my students are full of joy and love to communicate with their peers and others throughout the school! Many of my students are non-verbal and currently do not produce words/phrases, so we rely on picture cards and communication boards. Picture cards and communication boards give my students access to communicating their wants and needs, feelings, and participation in classwork and casual conversation.

Speaking is a huge part of most people's daily lives, and these materials can help give my students a voice!

We currently do not have access to a color printer so many of our current pictures are black, grey, and grainy, which makes them difficult to relate to. I hope that you can help provide us with the materials needed to make the picture cards and communication boards that my students need. These kids are pretty great and they have so much to say!
