This is my 5th year teaching Kindergarten at Audubon school in Chicago. If you were to walk into Audubon school you would realize what a great place it is to be employed as well as to be a student. Our halls are brightly decorated with work from present and past students. The environment is cheerful and positive. However, we just don't have the resources to purchase the items that would make the day easier for us and more enjoyable for the students. My class is asking for a large carpet. Kindergarteners spend an enormous amount of time on the carpet. They start and end their day on the carpet and spend a good portion of the afternoon there. We read stories, play games, listen to instruction, calender, show and tell. The list goes on and on. Over the past couple of years I have come to the realization that my students need to have their own space on the rug. Some students just aren't able to sit next to others. Some students just want to know that they have their own spot, and no one else can sit there. The carpet I am asking for has rows of different colored squares. This is easy for the students to be in their space and only their space.
