I have some of the brightest second grade students in Florida. They are willing to work very hard every day for me and do whatever I ask. They learn in the classical style, which is the benefit of direct instruction and Socratic discussions every minute of every day. They are very respectful to adults and their parents are there for us teachers if we need anything.
The kids learn so much in second grade.
A few of the concepts are cursive writing, money, time, all four operations in math, Greek gods and goddesses, The War of 1812, the Civil War. the human body, nutrition, all eight parts of speech. I could go on and on.
We do a lot of hands-on learning, also. We color and label diagrams and maps and many other things. One thing that my students would benefit from the most is to have a class set(25) of good quality colored pencils(12-24 per set) and a good sharpener for colored pencils. We have crayons, but colored pencils would do such a better job. They would last an entire year, for sure.
My Project
We do much labeling and color-coding of the activities we do every day in every subject. We don't have any colored pencils, only old crayons. The crayons are too short and too thick to be accurate, quite often.
My students would be able to make thinner, straighter lines with a set of colored pencils each.
They could label things with easier-to-read letters. Crayon writing does not work well. The kids also can distinguish between parts of things so much easier with different colors, instead of just the gray of regular pencils. We would love to make a nice thank you project for the donor, to show how we appreciate the help.
