This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are bright, inquisitive, and excited to learn about art. I teach in an urban Title I school. Our Artists range from grades PreK- to eight. Our school operates on a tight budget and has little to no funding for art, but It’s important to me that my students have all the resources and supplies they need for the art class.
As their teacher and mentor, nothing would please me more than to just hand students the art supplies they need.
My Project
My school is a high poverty Title I school with 100% of students receiving free lunch. My students are often faced with adult situations at home that no 8 or 9 years old should ever have to face including homelessness, drug addiction, foster care, mental health issues, medical problems, immigration, and extreme poverty. Their ability to overcome these obstacles and maintain a willingness to learn and develop as individuals in the classroom amazes me. They pour their hearts and souls into their work, each other, and their teacher each time they walk through the door of our room.
