This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school with over 85% receiving free and reduced-price lunches. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, including English language learners, homeless, and those being raised by grandparents, single parents, or other relatives.
They are smart and creative.
They continually surprise me with their talent. They love working on projects. Projects give them a chance to be creative and show their learning their way. They love to read anything they can. They love the challenge of math and the adventure of science. Challenge them and they will take it and run with it.
They love being at school, learning and sharing what they learn. They are the best kids! They love illustrating their writing. They love giving their projects a little "sparkle" by adding an "artsy" quality to them. Even reading projects are more exciting with a little art.
My Project
All of my students love to add art work to their assignments. Imagine a study of bald eagles coming to life with their own drawing of an eagle to add to their research. They pay closer attention to details when doing art work. Imagine listening to a story and making what they visualize come to life with their own illustrations. And what child doesn't like to use markers, crayons, and colored pencils!
With these new materials my students will gladly work on assignments, staying engaged and focused, when art is involved.
Please help my students open up their imaginations and let their creative juices flow.
