This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I currently have 23 students in my class, but it is a very transient community and I have had up to 26 already this year. The kids I get to spend the year with are very special because they often have less than other kids their age, but they show so much appreciation for what they do have.
My students are being raised in an urban community where they face a lot of challenges that many kids never have to worry about, but they believe in themselves as much as I do!
This age group always loves to dance, play, and listen to stories. They are learning a lot this year, including how to treat each others and show respect for each others' differences. I can't imagine anything more rewarding than getting to teach these inner-city school kids!
My Project
We use markers, colored pencils, dry erase markers and glue every single day. I have learned to purchase name brands when it comes to these items, because the cheaper brands dry up very quickly and I end up having to buy twice as much. My students use these items to complete all types of work, including art projects that allow them to show their creativity and practice their fine motor skills.
The kids put more effort into their work, and enjoy it more, when they have lots of colors to use.
We also use dry erase boards every day to practice writing high frequency words and complete sentences. As a result, we go through a lot of dry erase markers.
The supply of markers, pencils and glue I purchased at the beginning of the year is nearly depleted. This order would get us through the rest of this school year, and the beginning of the next school year as well!
