I teach the English half of 5th grade CLIP, the Cupertino Language Immersion Program. I teach science, math, English reading and English writing. My students also take Mandarin writing, Mandarin reading and social studies in Mandarin with another teacher.
My students work very hard to balance learning a second language, all their regular school subjects and after school activities.
It is a huge commitment for the students and their families to be a part of this program.
My students enjoy learning beyond the 5th grade curriculum. I take them deeper into science. They rise up to the challenge and produce quality work. Overall, these students work hard and exceed expectations in academics, pursuing their bilingual education.
Standardized testing is a stressful time for all students. I set aside some time in each day of testing for students to work on an art project. This project coincides with their memoir writing unit. So the students create a piece of artwork that reflects their memoir or shows a scene of their story. This is a great creative outlet for the students during a very intense testing period and it gives them something fun to do on a day when school is very stressful.
New art supplies inspire fresh ideas and the fun tape and paper will give students more creative routes to go with their art project instead of just drawing a simple picture.
We will also be using these art supplies for science posters. Each year my students make posters about the different body systems, plants, animal cells and other topics. The students also present problems in math every chapter and they can choose to make a poster to explain their problem. By explaining their solution, the students better understand the problem and how to arrive at the solution. It makes them stop and think of the steps they did automatically to solve the problem.
New art supplies will refresh our old supplies from the last teacher who had this classroom. Now my my students this year and in future years will have a new set of markers, sharpies, crayons and colored pencils. This will make art more enjoyable and help inspire students to new heights in their academics and art projects for the classroom.
