This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The STEM school is where I teach a very diverse group of kids. Many of these kids come from homes where education doesn't play an important role. These students have not had experiences that help their academic career. These kids need many different opportunities and methods available for them to learn.
The entire school receives free lunch, and many families live below the poverty line and are having a difficult time providing basic school supplies or experiences students need.
These students need all the encouragement and opportunities they can get to realize educational benefits. Students need to be able to move while they work. They need to feel comfortable in their classroom where they can find the materials that are needed to complete the tasks assigned to them.
I would like for my students to have the tools and materials that they need to be successful students. They need avenues to express their talents and learn using their learning style. The majority of the students are not exposed to activities that will provide this fun and yet educational opportunity.
Students will research how to Tye-dye shirts and all the things that go into making a shirt. When they know what to do they will Tye-dye shirts. After they complete this activity they will write a paper about what the steps are to create the shirt and while wearing the shirt will read their paper to other students and faculty at the school. The Happy Feet Fidget Bands are for several of my students that have sensory overload and need to have the ability to move in a quiet way. Students learn so many things in a variety of ways and the shirts, socks, and dye for the tye-dye activity will help tremendously.
Many of my students have difficulty focusing and learning using traditional teaching methods.
Students need for movement causes problems in the classroom preventing others as well as their learning. The use of the Fidget Bands will give them the ability to release their energy and still allow the class to not be disturbed. Using hands-on materials are very important to students with learning disabilities. They need activities that address the standards that they are missing. These materials will provide a variety of ways to learn so they can realize the importance of and how to research topics they have an interest in. They will learn how to put all their information in an understandable report. When students are having fun learning they will retain more of the educational content. This will make a difference in their lives.
