Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of my students work hard to finish assignments early. Some prefer to turn assignments in on time. At the same time, other students struggle to meet due dates. The items I selected for this project will reward those who finish early or on time.
Students who engage in learning and who are self-motivated need a different kind of scaffolding for their assignments.
Unique coloring pages, puppet shows, and board games that promote critical thinking, fair play, and attention to detail are all ways that I have found to reward students for their hard work. Students in this spectrum enjoy challenges and want more.
The Game of Life is a game that helps students to begin to think about college, career, family responsibilities, and some of the aspects of life that go with those things. The game can help create an open dialogue to better the student's relationships with one another and with the instructor.
The coloring sheets are themed toward relevant material in history. Relating to Hispanic culture and heritage with the sugar skulls and day of the dead designs, and relating to United States geography with the National Park designs.
Coloring can help students relax and categorize the learning they just accomplished into memory. Puppets, well, puppets are puppets. Try to be in a bad mood with a puppet in your hand. Try and argue negatively with a puppet in your hand. The puppet is used as a diffusing tool in my classroom. We use them for sensitive subject material, so we can engage without taking arguments personally. We also use them when students are shy. They can hide behind the curtain and stick the puppet out for their speeches and other speaking assignments.
