Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work predominantly with special needs students. Most of my students live in poverty. Most are English language learners. Some are great artists, some are social butterflies, some are funny, some are kind. ALL of them have something beautiful and unique to contribute to the world.
My students comprehend the world so much better when they are taught with a multi-sensory approach.
Videos, community outings, role-playing- these types of activities bring so much to their learning experience.
And of course, visual aids. I supply my classes with paper-based visual aids to increase their comprehension of what is being asked of them and also to help them express themselves more effectively.
My Project
I serve two classes of moderately- severely impaired high school students. Many of them have medical issues that prevent them from communicating effectively. Some of them are able to use hi-tech devices to aid in communication, but not all of them. I make communication books and other visual aids like classroom schedules and icons to help them both understand information better and express themselves better.
Autism, cerebral palsy, Fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome: Students with these disorders really benefit from augmentative communication including visual aids.
Unfortunately, our special education staff does not have access to a color printer at our school site. Visual aids are so much more engaging when they are in color. They look more professional and seem to ignite student interest more than black and white aids.
