My students need a printer and ink cartridges to make color coded graphic organizers to write essays throughout the school year. The use of color coded visuals for my special learners is imperative.
Imagine viewing print and not being able to see the difference in a word, sentence or paragraph unless the print was highlighted. Imagine as well the difficulty in writing an essay when you are unsure of where to place your thoughts and ideas.
I am blessed to work with a wonderful group of students with learning disabilities at a large middle school in Illinois.
I teach 57 students during 5 instructional periods throughout the school day. My students learn best through visual aids. Writing and reading assignments are difficult for my students unless they are provided color coded organizers and worksheets. The students have success when they are provided color coded graphic organizers to help them break down how to read and write text. The joy they experience when writing successful text is overwhelming to witness. Additionally, there is virtually no frustration for the learners when color coded organizers are provided because they have a clear vision of where to place their thoughts and ideas when reading and writing.
My Project
The students would benefit greatly from having a color printer available for the purpose of providing colored graphic organizers for all writing assignments. For example when writing a narrative essay, students would use the color coded organizer to break down the parts of the paper and in turn transfer the parts to the appropriate place on the final color coded sheet. Students would be able to write and transfer from rough draft to final copy following the colors with success each time they write. Students would also be able to peer edit each others papers as well because of the color coding on the paper and peer edit checklist. Additionally, students would benefit from the scanner because I would scan and load copies of organizers to the classroom Promethean board for modeling purposes.
This project is important because currently there is no color printer available for my use consistently at school.
I am able to print graphic organizers and worksheets for my students occasionally at school and have to print the rest at home. Having a color printer in the classroom of these special learners would allow them to have color coded worksheets as needed throughout the school day which would positively impact their education as readers and writers.
