Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an extra special class this year! This is their first full year of uninterrupted learning. My students lost half of their kindergarten year and most of their first-grade year to the challenges of the pandemic.
They are excited to be able to be in school and with their peers and it shows every day through their kindness towards each other and eagerness to learn.
They come in with smiles on their faces and are ready to face challenges every day! Their biggest challenge is reading. Losing their formative reading years to remote schooling a lot of my students are behind in their reading skills. A majority of the students in my class are English Langauge Language learners with families that speak different languages, making it difficult to practice and learn reading skills at home. Another portion of my class are low-income families whose financial priorities don't always allow for the purchasing of books or trips to the library. After limited interactions with reading the past few years, my kids are super excited to interact with books! They are ready to learn and eager to have hands-on experiences after learning from a computer a majority of their academic career.
My Project
My students love writing! They can spend hours writing creative stories and I would like to provide them with quality art supplies to help them illustrate the stories that they have worked so hard on. Having them produce beautiful pictures to go with their writing will help them feel more like published authors. I have also requested multicultural crayons to allow for each student in my diverse class to feel represented when searching for a color to draw pictures of themselves. Also, having quality coloring materials will really assist the students with drawing math diagrams to help them solve problems. Using different colors will really help them with problem-solving, having different colors to represent different numbers. Having enough coloring supplies for each student to keep in their desk, will help cut down on distractions. Currently, my students are sharing a box of markers and have to get up to get colors and it slows down our creative process and is limiting due to sharing amongst the whole class.
