I teach gifted and talented 3rd-6th grade students at three different Title I schools. Title I means that at least 40% of the students qualify for free lunches. My schools have 55%-79% of their students qualifying. My students come class to receive gifted enrichment services once a week. This service includes problem solving design units like detective skills, including crime scene investigations for third grade, simple machines for fourth grade, computer coding and video game design for fifth grade, and robotics for sixth grade. This type of education is called STEM which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These units will definitely encompass all four areas. These units require my students to create presentations used to share their learning with experts in any given field.
My Project
At the end of each design unit my students are involved in a culminating project which requires reflecting on their learning and creating a way to present that learning to experts in the field. These presentations allow the students to shine. They are able to show their learning by teaching their newfound skills to others. Presenting to professionals in their field provides opportunities to converse in the language of the project. This color printer will add color and pizazz to their presentations and allow my students to feel like the professionals that they are. I have no doubt my students will go far, and practicing professionalism is necessary for this to occur.
