Curious, imaginative, fun-loving, creative: these are just some of the words I'd use to describe my new group of students. My classroom is made up of eight smart and endearing young people diagnosed with Autism. We are located in a low-income school where I need to buy most of my own supplies. An autism classroom is not run in the traditional way.
My students require a much more individualized and specialized way of learning.
They learn through hands-on materials and visuals. When provided with this type of learning environment, my students can learn and excel! But first, we need some basic supplies to keep our classroom running smoothly!
My Project
My students need a class set of markers, crayons, colored pencils, pens, and glue. With the materials you help us purchase, we will be able to incorporate art within our lessons and display them throughout our hallway walls.
My students do not have "specials" as do many other schools.
We do not get art anymore on a weekly basis. This is placed in the teacher's hands. With your help, we can fill our hallways with colorful art that reflect our Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, bully free zone, holidays, school values, and pride. We will also use supplies in our daily independent work.
My wonderful 5th and 6th grades get excited when they get new materials, especially when it comes in a yellow box with the famous words "Crayola" on them.
Quality materials are not easy and common things for my students to come by. A colorful, art filled classroom will bring ownership to my students in their environment. It will liven our classroom with artwork created by us! My students will feel a greater sense of belonging seeing their published work posted on our walls!
