Color Our World

My students need 7 sets of markers and highlighters.

I teach 26-30 of the most wonderful, curious fifth-graders you could ever be fortunate enough to meet. Our community has been hit pretty hard by many layoffs, and of course, our school is also feeling the effects of the budget crunch. We are a Reading First, Title One school, with very eager students. I would just like to supply for them the basic materials some other schools take for granted.

When can we use our whiteboards? Do you have any highlighters? I'd like to edit this essay I'm working on. What can I use for my science display, I only have a pencil, and it's not showing up very well. These are only a few of the questions and comments I hear throughout a regular school day. However, sadly, with no markers, the students return to their seats disappointed. Brighten their world by helping my class obtain colorful markers to use in our everyday schoolwork.

30 fifth graders use markers on a daily basis. We use dry erase markers several times a day on our individual whiteboards(math, literacy, spelling etc.), and on the larger, classroom whiteboards (scheduling, directions, announcements, learning games, guided practice). Highlighters play an important role in the editing process of writing, especially various colors. For example, blue for spelling, pink for punctuation, orange for capitalization. This is the best way I've found to get the students to actually enjoy editing their work. Other types of markers are used for projects such as science fair displays, posters, art book reports, the possibilities are endless! Sadly, without these markers, the whiteboards gather dust on the shelf, the posters lack vivid colors, editing is more of a chore. Children like colors, and when given the opportunity to use them, they are more interested in the topic at hand, and tend to put more effort into their work. All the assorted markers I'm requesting will provide my students with a more exciting, enhanced work environment. This will lead to happier students (and teachers). Happier students perform better in school, overall.

By donating to my project, you will be contributing to a more colorful, brilliant, exciting world. Remember when you were a child and you were handed a brand-new colorful marker? Oh, to think of the possibilities that one single marker contains. It's mind-boggling.
