My students need a color printer to put color into printed charts and picture clues that hang on the walls as well as to be able to print out more vibrant projects.
Have you ever thought about how color brings television shows and movies to life better than when they were in black and white? My first grade classroom is still stuck in the dark ages. Help color our world!
I teach first grade at an inner city school with a very diverse population including many ESL students.
Each child has a very different life story but they are all fun, loving and full of bright and colorful stories to share. They love to read and are very curious about the world they live in. My class is full of gymnasts, musicians, singers, dancers, animal lovers, caring helpers and a fact whiz.
My Project
In first grade, imagery is very important in teaching all aspects of the curriculum. It is especially important for English Language Learners to have an image to rely on while they are learning to speak, read and write. That being said, word walls/word banks that include picture clues along with the words are crucial for success in learning new vocabulary that is important in classroom discussions, reading and writing. Our school does not have a color printer available for teachers to use and therefore our class word walls and other printed charts are all black and white. If I had a color printer to print out the picture and word cards used for word walls/word banks around the classroom, students could locate different images easier and also have a better understanding of the image. Children are able to remember words or images easier when they are able to visualize the word card using colors. Color would also help them to locate a words that may be color coded by concept or skill.
By supporting my project, you are helping to teach and enhance the vocabulary of my first grade students to allow them to be successful in academic discussions, reading and writing.
