Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are always more supplies needed, but this year we have a wide range of abilities and challenges to satisfy in Art. We need origami supplies for special needs classes, portfolio supplies for students auditioning, water colors for portfolio work, craft paper for display, and
markers for adding color.
Our students are mainly from the Caribbean, central and South America.
There are many who are new to the USA this school year. Some are from parts of Africa- Mali, Senegal, Guinea and others have come from Yemen and Eastern Europe.
The population has become more diverse yet all share a commonality of being English Language learners. As the students struggle to adapt to the new way of life, their parents and guardians are struggling as well. There is little time in their daily lives for enrichment or to attend outside cultural events. Our school is the only place where they experience art.
My Project
My students are very lucky to have art 3-4 times per week. It is well thought that the arts offer an even "playing field" for those students who are struggling to learn English and adopt a new culture. Art is a universal language.
We will use Origami to tell the story of Sadako Sasaki and her 1000 cranes for peace. This project includes Origami paper, the book about Sadako and instructions for making origami cranes. We will also create landscape paintings with watercolor paint, colored pencils and markers where students may reflect on the geography of their country of origin. Finally, we will use black mat board to frame and display the paintings and drawings, and the craft paper to hang as a background for the display.
The list of supplies we are requesting will be used for a number of projects.
The 8th graders will put the finishing touches on their portfolios as they prepare to audition at an art High School. The 6th graders will learn about geometry through origami and peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki. They will have beautiful colored paper to display all their work and then continue to inspire the rest of the community.
