This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Transitional Kindergarten (TK) kids are incredibly inquisitive, active, eager to learn and super fun! TK is the first year of a 2 year kindergarten program. This year I have 12 boys and 15 girls in my class. We are a Title I school. This means a large percentage of the children come from socioeconomically disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds with a wide range of school readiness skills and needs. A quarter of my kids do not speak English well and only a few have been in preschool, so you can imagine how exciting it is for me to be a part of their first formal learning experience. I am hoping you will join me on this wonderful adventure.

My Project

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” I love this quote by Ben Franklin as it sums up how I strive to set up the learning in my TK (Transitional Kindergarten) classroom. My number one goal every year is to continue to provide high quality curriculum materials while instilling a lifelong love of learning in my sweet students.

“Colors speak louder than words.” (Anonymous) Sadly, our school district only provides black and white printers for teachers.

The color printer, ink and laminating sheets I have requested will give my students the opportunity to explore various hands-on math, science and literacy concepts in vivid color. For example, I recently bought “All About Butterflies,” and "My 5 Senses," science units for our science exploration center, but then I realized they are not going to work if they are printed in black and white. How can my students compare, contrast and sort the different butterfly species pictures if they are printed in black and white? In addition, my kids need to see the different colors when learning about the sense of sight. I would also like to get some counting & color sorting games for my kids, but that will have to wait until I get a color printer. Along with the color printer, I have requested laminating pouches to ensure the colorfully printed games will withstand years of hands-on use by small children.

It is not easy to hold the attention of small children for very long, but with your help in providing colorfully printed science, math and literacy centers and games, I am sure we will have a lot of self-directed, cooperative learning going on. Thank you so much!
