I am a Special Education teacher in a large urban school district in a high poverty area. Our school is an IB (International Baccalaureate) World School. I teach Math in grades fifth through eighth inclusion classrooms. Our school's focus is on inquiry. We want our students to ask questions and then find answers. We also follow an international baccalaureate curriculum to help prepare our students to become international minded. My students are amazing individuals. They come to school every day knowing that they don't necessarily learn like everyone else, but they put their heart and soul into everything they do. I want my students to learn that hard work is its own reward, and that a good attitude can get them almost anywhere they want to go.
My Project
My students are very thankful for the color printer they have to show off their work. It has benefited every student in the classroom and has increased their confidence and pride in their work. They have been able to create exciting research projects, stories or pictures. The students love to show their work inside and outside the classroom. However we ran out of the color cartridges and now they can print their projects and work only on a black and white printer. Giving color to their projects increases their confidence and heightens their imagination. Their imagination in the classroom is endless when they have access to a color printer.
Some of my students use color coded behavior charts and a variety of daily visual schedules like real photo picture schedule, If/Then schedules and color coded picture schedules.
Color coded schedules give them an additional cue to discriminate between pictures easily. Color pictures makes it easier for my special learners to make meaning of the words and the visual representation of the activity. Color pictures makes it easier for my special learners to make meaning of the words and the visual representation of the activity.
My students rely on the class printer to print out materials they need for their projects. When it is used for multiple grade levels, ink runs out fast. I want my students to focus on their projects instead of worrying if they will be able to print their final product.
