Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher of a first grade self-contained class in a very poor Bronx school. My students really enjoy coloring and doing art projects. Everyday, they ask me if I have any new crayons. It is almost as if once the point is not pointy anymore they can't use them! My students have a great love for free drawing and just expressing themselves through their art creations. I can not tell you how many times I have had to buy crayons for my classroom. I only ask my parents for a list of supplies once, which is at the beginning of the year. Needless to say, by December all of the crayons, pencils, glue sticks, and notebooks are either broken, used up or have seemed to disappear! This can become very expensive, especially when it is up to the individual teacher to buy everything else needed in the classroom.
My students and I would really appreciate a donation of much needed supplies like the ones listed above. Since my students are mainly classified as learning disabled, I use drawing as a way to see how well they have comprehended a story or to even sneak in some math without them realizing it! They will write a sentence about their favorite part of a book we read and always save the drawing of it for last. They love to see their art work hanging up around the room as well as creating cards and pictures for their moms.
