My Project

I work in a small urban school nestled in a working-class neighborhood of our city. As a Speech Language Pathologist, I serve special education students and help them develop and strengthen their communication skills. The students on my caseload not only represent a diverse section of the our city, but they also come into my speech room with disorders ranging from autism, learning disabilities, phonological impairments to stuttering. Every week these students enter my room and are eager to talk and share what’s going on in their lives. They always put forth great effort even when communicating may be difficult for them.

My students love to learn but sometimes learning can be challenging for them.

They get so excited to be able to use materials that are hands-on and allow them to make progress on their speech and language goals. Creating visual materials enables my students the ability to access the same materials as their non-disabled peers.

Using colored ink to print and create individualized materials will ensure my students can comprehend what is going on not only in my room but also in their classroom. In my therapy room, we use colored ink to create visuals such as schedules, adapted books, and hands on practice activities that engage students and increase their participation.
