What I love about my students is the diversity that they bring into my classroom. My students represent a rich cultural mix of ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. They also represent an array of achievement levels in both the academic and extracurricular arenas. It continues to be a privilege to serve and work with my students year after year, not just to observe their experience in accessing my curriculum (Spanish) but to monitor their growth and progress in general preparedness, respect, and responsibility-- life skills that will be vital in navigating the "real world" of the 21st century. My students will never know how much they have taught me about my own practice and about other perspectives.
My students range from independent and academically high-achieving, to those requiring accommodations and differentiated instruction to target the learning style(s) that prove most effective for them.
Wherever they may fall in that spectrum of achievement, I think that it is imperative to meet each student where s(he) is and celebrate their uniqueness and growth. It is my duty to provide each of my students the opportunity to tap into their strengths as well as improve their challenge areas, even more so during distance learning.
My Project
As we move through distance learning's first semester in my Spanish classes, I continue to find new ways to keep my students as engaged and as focused as is possible in our virtual setting. In the physical classroom, I made it a point to keep the environment colorful and vibrant-- from the posters on the walls to the variety of marker colors I used when writing on my white board to the flashcards I made to introduce vocabulary and explain essential grammar points. Many former students over the years have commented on how my colorful classroom helped them remember important vocabulary and grammar.
In an effort to replicate that classroom success during Zoom lessons, I am creating colorful visuals on my printer to use during our synchronous instructional time and will need supplies such as replacement toner cartridges, a three-hole punch, an electric pencil sharpener, and a document camera to deliver and organize materials for colorful instruction.
I am so fortunate to have learners of such a diverse mix of cultural backgrounds, learning styles, socioeconomic groups, and personalities. I take my responsibility to maintain an equitable learning environment seriously and that summons me to do whatever I can so that my students may access the content and maximize their potential.
