This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
According to the last ACE survey, our city in Pennsylvania has one of the highest rates for students suffering from traumatic experiences. The zip code from where my students are from has one of the highest rates in the city. Some stories that have come across my desk range from abuse, addiction, shootings, hunger, and lack of both parents in the home. Students come with a lot of baggage to school. School to them is looked at as a safe haven to come to every day to get away from these traumas.
If the students don't know that you care, they won't care about what you're teaching them.
I make sure to create a learning environment for my students that make them feel relaxed and comfortable. I greet them at the door and let them know that this is our room, not just mine. Students know that my door is always open to them. This is why I have a hard time getting them to leave at the end of the day.
My Project
My students need coloring books, fine point markers, twistable crayons, and colored pencils to help keep them calm. These materials will be stored in their "Middle Space" all purpose area.
Students can use these supplies when they are feeling anxious or stressed out.
The materials can help calm them down and feel more centered. This is a quick activity that can be used right in our classroom to change the student's attitude during the day and put them on a better track to be more successful in their classrooms.
The camera and film will be used to show off our students on bulletin boards!
