Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My high school is located in the middle low-income, largely Hispanic area. My students are all English Language Learners that have arrived in the United States in the last few weeks, if not days. I teach Newcomer English which is basically an English crash course with material ranging from Pre-Kindergarten phonetics to reading materials and strategies to stay on track with their other peers in 9th-grade classes. Their first year is structured with a mix of both English and Spanish classes to help them obtain credits but be immersed in the English language and help them reach graduation in a short amount of time.
My students are often older and have less experience with the English language yet will still graduate in 4 years or less.
There effort and passion for learning are what drives me to teach every day. Not only do we learn from each other, but they also teach me so many things about the world and challenge and stretch me in ways I could never have imagined. I am so thankful for their desire to learn and embrace their bilingualism (if not multilingualism)!
My Project
Newcomer students rely on images, translations, and examples to fully understand a lesson in English. With a color printer, we are able to provide the students with instant resources at their fingertips that will enhance their learning experience. Being able to instantly print and laminate will allow students to create and preserve projects. The funding of this project will also allow our Newcomer teacher team the ability to make one color copy and laminate to add to our stations.
I love being able to incorporate technology into our classroom and an upcoming project requires our students to design flyers about their culture and we all know things look better in color!
The color printer will help us be able to expand our learning at the Newcomer level and push our students to create projects that go above and beyond.
I look forward to being able to print small quantities of paper in color to help build learning and make connections with words in both languages.
