The best way to describe my students is that they are a group of collaborators who happen to do math while they're in my room. My kids work hard each day to improve themselves and grow as mathematicians. We focus on individualizing the education of each student in my classroom and differentiating the curriculum to meet each of them at their current knowledge level. Many of my students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and do not have the extra funds for supplies they need everyday at school.
In my classroom this year, I am building an environment where students are more open to taking academic risk and utilizing technology to reach every student's needs in a home-like, comfortable environment.
In order to foster a more individualized environment, I am incorporating a myriad of technological resources for my students to be able to practice new skills they have learned and to continue growing skills they have learned in the past. I am also incorporating flexible seating to allow students choice in their seating to better assist them in learning. If you're not comfortable, you're not going to learn!
This project will help my students have more choice in the type of seat they can sit in. Research has shown that students who are comfortable and have methods for releasing their energy while learning are more successful in the classroom. Flexible seating allows them to move while they learn and these stools would make a great addition to our classroom so that they can sit at desks of varying heights to foster a comfortable learning environment.
The color paper will help us transfer our boring white copy paper activities into colorful one that we can create and share with others.
Bringing color into the classroom also produces a sense of home so that they can express themselves and embrace the colorful side of life!
