I teach sixth grade English language arts to a great group of kids in Brooklyn. I have an amazing group of kids who get so excited about the characters in the books we read that they shout their enthusiastic answers in class. I love that they are passionate about books and know this is my gift to give them, the love of reading.
We work every day in groups, both big and small, to build each other up.
Maybe we're creating travel brochures for settings of our books or slideshow decks of Greek gods and goddesses. We may be devising arguments to encourage people to adopt pets instead of buying them from pet stores or writing scripts to create news stories to help other students understand the plight of endangered species.
My Project
With two weeks before the start of the school year, we don't have a school schedule, no teachers have a program and we don't even know what classes we are teaching. We do have a tentative grade level. Planning is difficult to say the least. We are supposed to start in person but that is debatable as well. I am trying to get a basic syllabus in place.
My kids are already dealing with starting a new school after three months of remote learning.
September is going to be dedicated to routines and social emotional learning. But we will have to get back to typical learning eventually. Since shared books are no longer an option, I plan on scan excerpts of books and pairing them with articles this year. I would like to print the fiction excerpts on one color paper and the non fiction articles on another to make it easier for my kids to find in their folders. Of course, we still need plain white paper for writing pieces and handouts.
This is going to be some year. I need some help to get us through it.
