We are a special education resource class in coastal SC. Our district is economically and ethnically diverse. The families in our community work in a variety of industries from tourism and technology to farming and healthcare.
My students are far more than a label but among the challenges I serve are learning disabilities that have manifested in the area of reading, math or both, Autism Spectrum, and Other Health Impairments varying in medical diagnosis.
Every student is unique and has a different comfort style at which they learn best. My class in interactive and inquiry-based. My students are curious and anxious to learn.
My Project
At the turn of the new semester, I was assigned a new class that I was not planning to teach. The needs of our population warranted a special education core replacement ELA class for some of our students. A class that did not exist at my school before now. With a new class comes the need for some new materials. The materials in this project will give us the tools that we need to carry out a full ELA curriculum rich with reading comprehension skills. I have requested highlighter, colored pencils and post-it notes to use as color coding tools in a comprehension toolkit.
