Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, first generation students with many of their families immigrating from Latin and South America. My students speak Spanish and English at home and at school. While they learn about their families' traditions at home they are also learning about the culture and history of the country they live in. They are learning to build context in their reading while also developing English proficiency.
Some students have older brother and sisters who help them with homework and reading at home.
However, many of the students are the first born in their families and can sometimes struggle with understanding homework or simple vocabulary. The families are invested in making sure their students are working hard and putting their best effort forward.
My students love sharing stories about their experiences in their communities. They support each other and encourage each other to be good learners and great citizens. They are helpful and willing to work hard to get the best grade.
My Project
My students are learning to integrate different reading and writing strategies during independent work. My students are all English learners so they use a lot of time practicing and applying different sentence stems to help develop articulation and communication for different scenarios. Having a set of clipboards, colorful paper, and other organization materials in the classroom will help my students stay on task, stay excited, and make it easier to communicate about the things they are learning about. My students would also benefit from these things to create a sense of identity and authority in the classroom. The colorful paper would be used for graphic organizer and posters. The clipboards would help them as they move around the classroom and work in centers with their partners. The magazine racks would be a home for their books which don't currently fit in their desks.
