I teach at a Title I school in South Carolina where over 89% of our students receive free/reduced-price lunch. I teach all three grade levels, 6th-7th-8th pre-algebra and algebra 1.
I have the pleasure of looping with my students so I teach them for two years, both subjects.
A majority of my students are from one parent homes with many challenges that they bring with them to school daily.
My students work hard with their studies; however, it is difficult to bridge the gap of abstract learning to concrete learning with only the textbook.
My students need to be instrumental in their own learning with hands-on activities to fully reach their mathematical potential. I strive to find activities and projects that benefit them. My students are truly amazing, incredible, remarkable students that I love teaching!
My Project
My students learn better when they are actively engaged in their learning and note taking. The basic supplies and pencil cases to hold those supplies are necessary for my students to incorporate art in their notebooks.
By using crayons in mathematics while exploring mathematical concepts, my students can bring art and color into their mathematical learning of grade level concepts.
My students will also use their crayons and pencil boxes for activities in their interactive mathematical notebook. Students will use their crayons to color, highlight and decorate their notes. Using color helps the notes become more personal to my students, therefore increasing their understanding of the concepts. The pencil cases will help the crayons last all year for each individual student.
