My students need 25 copies (a classroom set) of the novel "The Martian" by Andy Weir. This will be for a novel study we're undertaking along with hands on activities!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My gifted classroom is very hands on and very active. We move around the room constantly, and are always video taping, building, analyzing, and discussing things in the classroom. Every day you would expect to see something different as my students investigate some aspect of the world around them.
My students are highly intelligent, and are rarely challenged to go above and beyond the regular curriculum.
my toughest challenge is finding activities that will stretch their minds and get them actively investigating the world around them. Unfortunately, my school is a title 1 school, with more than 80% of the population qualifying for free or reduced lunch. This means that funding is difficult to get for projects that are outside of the normal range of thinking.
My Project
My students will partake in a 9-week long book study of the Martian, but will get involved with so much more! We're going to do hands-on investigations that parallel the challenges faced by the astronauts and scientists in the book. My students will be purifying water, will be growing food using hydroponics, will be developing a means of non-verbal communication, will be using LEGO Mindstorm robot kits to build rovers that will autonomously move around the classroom, will be building model rockets that will successfully carry a payload into "orbit" and back, as well as a range of other projects that parallel events in the book.
Donating to this project will enable my students to get a first hand taste of what it would be like to be stranded in a hostile environment and have to use their wits in order to survive on an almost daily basis.
They will also get an idea of the training and preparation necessary to successfully get an astronaut on the planet Mars, and help that astronaut to survive.
