Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade at a Title 1 school. My students come from working class and immigrant families. Many of them are learning English as a second language, some of them have special needs, and all of them love to learn. School is an important outlet for these kids who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
They say it never rains in Southern California, but that's just not true! We get plenty of rainy days, and when it rains, we have recess inside the classroom. On those days, we break out the board games. The first rainy day this year, we took out the games, and one of my students said, "Do we have any games that have all the pieces?" I looked at my tired games that I've had for countless years. Chess pieces are missing, Battleship boats have disappeared, and decks of cards are decimated. My kids go on without complaining--they play Battleship with only a few of the ships to hide and chess without the knights. This just isn't right!
My kids need more games for rainy day recesses and also for special activity days. I am requesting chess, Uno, Clue, Boggle, and two sets of Battleship. These are the most popular games in the classroom, and they really make my kids think! I would also like to use these games during special activity days as a reward for the outstanding job my students do every day.
