College Tour 2017

We need to know that college is something that is within our reach and understand what it takes to attend college.

About My Students

My students all believe that they will graduate from high school, but very few of them are planning to go to college after graduation. They state that college will be "too hard" and "too expensive" so they have given up hope that they will ever go to college.

Many of my students have specific learning disabilities in reading or math and often feel discouraged when they talk about their future.

My students love to experience hands-on activities and really want to go on a field trip.

Unfortunately, lack of funding has prevented them from being able to take a field trip in over two years. Their families care about them, but it is hard for the to scrounge up money for things like field trips.

Kennesaw State University is an established university with a great disability services program.

This project will cover the round trip bus transportation and lunch for my students when they tour Kennesaw State University.

During this tour, my students will be able to see and understand that they can go to college. They will learn what it takes to get into a college, what will be expected of them once they are in college, and that a college education is something that they can afford.

They will be able to see what a classroom looks like, what it would be like to live in a dorm, and interact with current students at the school.

In Their Own Words

We want to explore colleges in our area and understand what we have to do in order to attend college. By understanding the entrance requirements and the programs that colleges like Kennesaw State University have to offer, we can make better decisions on our future endeavors and what our post-high school plans entail.

We want to squish all the stereotypes that many people associate with our disabilities to show that we can do anything that we set our minds to. We believe in ourselves and know that we can be successful in college, even though it is a little intimidating. We want others to see that we can be the leaders of the next generation!

This project will allow us to experience a day in the life of a college student. We will be able to do a full tour of Kennesaw State University and have lunch with current students and professors. We want to know what college classes are like, how big a dorm is, and most importantly, where to find good food on campus!
