My students need art supplies, snacks, and table cloths to participate in a college signing day to reward our scholars that are going on to pursue education, join the military or obtain gainful employment.
Being a counselor at a community high school in Indianapolis, Indiana, I work with students who live and attend school in a low-income/high poverty area.
My students are hard working, creative, and have a wonderful sense of humor.
The sense of community the students embody is largely due to the community around the school supporting them as much as possible. Being in a low socioeconomic area of the city, the community does its best to support our scholars; however, there are always needs to be met and help needed. These scholars are bright students, with a bright future ahead of them and as their counselor, I intend to help every one of them reach their full potential I know they are capable of.
My Project
The materials I have requested will make a difference to my scholars because it will help inspire them to achieve their goals. On May 4th the guidance department is hosting a College Signing Day for all scholars grades 8-12. The scholars in grades 8-11 will come up and sign posters committing themselves to pursuing education, the military, or gainful employment after graduating from high school. The posters and markers I requested would be used for these poster signings. Seniors will have the change to sign their own paper stating their intent to go to a specific college, join a specific branch of the military or pursue gainful employment. The snacks will then be given to seniors who a signing a more specific document for their plans next year.
For many of my scholars, their plans after high school become their only driving force to get through high school.
They work extremely hard to pursue a future for themselves and help their families. Many of my scholars will be the first in their family to attend college. They are trying to break the cycle of poverty in their family and it is so important to the guidance department to celebrate those scholars and inspire the younger scholars to strive for greatness as well.
