My Students

Our high school has a diverse student body population. Having great variety ethnically, culturally, religiously and socio-economically. Our students coming from all over the Long Beach area via multiple transportation routes: school busses, public transportation, personal vehicles or walking. Despite their mode of transportation, our students come to our school with pride and determination to do well both academically and in their extracurricular activities. More than 70% of our students are lower income and/or receive free or reduced lunch making them eligible for SAT/ College application fee waivers.

Our students are also self identified as first generation, making them the first in their family to decide to go to college.

As a result, most of our students work 1 or 2 part time jobs to help their families financially and still find time to be involved in sports and community service based activities. Students, specifically seniors, are special due to their resilience and educational grit. They have overcome issues and obstacles of homelessness, family difficulty, financial struggle, and cultural/gender identity development.

My Project

his event will celebrate college acceptances. I have spent this past year working with seniors to ensure they have the necessary resources and support to enroll in college. Many of my seniors, who have applied to a university or community college, do not have some of the items listed in this project such as the HP 14 inch stream laptop, Powerbeats 3, Canon MX492 Wireless Printer, lunch bag, laptop bag, laptop, and shower caddy. They have worked so hard thus far, and we want to respond to their hard effort!

As such, on May 39, 2019, we will be holding our fourth annual college signing day event called “Decision Day." This event will promote the college-going culture on campus in addition to celebrating the seniors’ journey through college admissions.

This year’s theme is “Its Only UP from Here” to reflect all the possibilities that will open up as they are in college, and encouraging them to explore and discover themselves and their surroundings.
