My students want to tell you all about it! For these kids, speech and debate is a doorway into college and a strong preparation for college-level research and writing. However, our classroom lacks the resources to allow students to do the research they need to be successful.
My 92 college prep Speech and Debate students currently do not have computer access during class time at our large, public high school.
Many are low- and middle-income students, some first-generation college applicants, who are dependent on site technology and teacher help. This lack of computers limits their ability to collaborate, research and write.
Having HP Netbooks in the classroom would allow more students access to the Internet during class, providing more opportunity to perform research. With the portability of the Netbooks, students could use the open space in the classroom and larger groups of students could work together on their research. This would result in the collaborative effort a person hopes to see in a team activity.
Speech and Debate is one of the most highly-rated activities when it comes to college admissions.
Being on the Speech and Debate Team provides our students with an opportunity to develop critical thinking and communication skills that is arguably unmatched by any other activity offered. Your help will allow our team members to make the most of this extremely important opportunity.
