Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To this day we can all recall the exact moment when we opened our college acceptance letter and spending the whole summer nervously getting ready for the 1st day of class. As a college coach I am able to experience the same excitement every graduating year. My students are all seniors from a range of different backgrounds but with majority having one thing in common. They are all 1st generation college students. With about 97% of our students coming from humble working class families, the college going process is confusing. However, the fear of the unknown has never stopped our students. We have incredibly bright students and despite external barriers they make a college education part of their future!
My Project
Each year we celebrate our graduating class's transition to college and their career. As a school we take time congratulate our seniors on their dedication for the last 4 years. "Decision Day" has become an event all grads look forward to attending. We raffle away college gear such as laptops, gift cards, and supplies. The grads are able to use the gifts to get ready for the transitions. Since the celebration is free and opened to all seniors, we are limited each year to help from our partnerships with outside organizations. We want to use the pre-filled backpacks to help more of our students get ready for college.
With limited funding (basically none) our wonderful teachers and staff donates basic college supplies to their grads for their transition to college.
We need simple things such as backpacks, pencils/pens, glue, and notebooks. With the pre-filled backpacks, we want to be able to provide some support to our students and families. Starting college is scary enough and having to worry about being prepared for class shouldn't be a reason holding our future leaders back!
