Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined." - Henry David Thoreau. Every child grows up with a dream. Unfortunately, not all of these children are given the tools to achieve their dreams.
My students are primarily first generation immigrants who attend school in the inner city Texas.
They come from DR Congo, Nepal, Mexico, and El Salvador. For many of them, English is a second language. Most parents are uneducated on the American education system and while most dream of sending their children to college, they do not understand how to do so. Without language as a barrier, my students are capable of becoming the first in their families to obtain a degree and improving the quality of life of their loved ones.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of collegeboard SAT study materials, copies of other SAT preparation books, and dry erase markers. As a high school mathematics teacher, I see it as my duty to ensure that all my students are on a path to college. To fulfill this duty, I aim to prepare my students for college entrance exams by incorporating SAT based activities in my algebra and precalculus classes. I also plan on teaching an SAT preparation course for our students. My students are at a significant disadvantage when compared to their more affluent peers when preparing for exams such as the SAT. Resources pertaining to this test are unavailable at our school and most families are unable to afford them. The dry erase markers will allow me to conduct more student friendly and engaging activities using interactive whiteboards. I am certain that these materials will assist me in ensuring that all my students have a successful future.
My students must cross many hurdles to obtain a university education.
For example, many come from single-parent homes, are unable to speak English, and are unable to access information on how to apply to American colleges. My primary goal as an instructor is to ensure that these hurdles do not prevent them from obtaining a successful future. By preparing them for success on the SAT using high-quality materials, I will have succeeded at at least one aspect of my goal.
