Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The senior class of 2021 expresses much ambition and passion. My role is to help high school seniors with anything college related. I assist seniors with college applications, resumes, essays, SAT/ACT registration, scholarships and financial aid. I serve in a Title I high school, where students struggle not only with high school teenage problems, but with family economical problems.
What I love the most about my students is their hard work and determination.
Their day does not end at 2:35 PM when the last bell rings. They go straight to work to help contribute to their family’s needs and financial burdens. Our students have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of them had to take on an extra responsibility of providing for their homes if their parents had lost their jobs. One student who comes to mind works almost a full time job after school and on the weekends to help his family make ends meet. Many of my students hear that college is not for them because there are more important things to worry about, like paying bills, but that does not halt their efforts nor hinder their attempts of trying hard to get into college.
My Project
My students have been working hard to complete all the steps necessary for college acceptances.
Many of my students have had financial difficulties this year.
Being able to relieve this burden of having to buy the necessities would be extremely helpful to them.
I am asking for basic stuff that will be necessary for them to have when they start their new journey away from home, such as backpacks, shower caddies, and hangers.
My students have always expressed a desire to pursue post-secondary education, and my hope is that these gifts will make it that much more exciting for them.
