Most of the students who found our school needed a different way to learn—they had hit every challenge in the book and been told all too many times that they would never succeed. With our individualized plans, these kids are gaining confidence and quickly realizing that they can graduate!
Even though we are an independent learning charter, we have begun an AVID cohort that helps our kids get to college.
Many of these kiddos never thought college was for them, but they're starting to see the possibilities in the world and in themselves, and it's pretty magical to watch their confidence grow.
My Project
When I ask my students what colleges they are interested in, they can only name the local community college because that is all they have ever been told they could get into. I want them to see the possibilities and see themselves as college material. And this takes some real shifting in their mindset. I need them to know that the world is open to them.
College pennants around the room help them think of possibilities—help them think "what if." With this project, I hope to create a classroom that opens up their minds, their world, and their aspirations..
