Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school is known to be one of the most diverse high schools in Long Beach with regards to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic background. I have the pleasure of interacting with students who are intelligent, curious, ambitious, and motivated to make a change, and it inspires me every day.
Many of these students have the great potential to go out into the world and truly make a difference.
Most students are low-income first-generation and have no idea about the college process. With a little support and guidance, many are going on to a 4-year university next year! I have no doubt that they will all go on to be agents of change in their communities and greater society.
My Project
We have spent this past year working with students of all grade levels, but especially with seniors, to ensure that they have the necessary resources, tools, knowledge, and support to prepare for and to enroll in college. Many of the seniors we have been working with are headed to college this upcoming Fall.
Choosing to go to college is an incredibly important decision to make, and we want to celebrate this decision with the seniors of our high school.
They have dedicated an immense amount of time and energy to the college application process. We want to affirm them for all of their hard work and their commitment to higher education. As such, in May 2018, we will be holding an event called “Decision Day”. The students will be attending the event free of charge. This event will promote the college-going culture on campus in addition to celebrating the seniors’ journey through college admissions. May 1st is the deadline for students to decide which college they will attend for the next 4 years, so this will be celebrating that decision. The event will reflect the endless opportunities and possibilities available to them because of their decision to go to college. The places these seniors will go extend far beyond the college campus they will be attending in the fall. These seniors will become leaders and agents of change as they reach new heights personally and professionally through their college experience.
Decision Day will be a lively event. There will be various activities to get the students excited about college and all that is ahead of them in their future. There will be food and beverages as well as a photo booth station and a signing of where the students will be attending college. During a free raffle, we will raffle the iPad to students who cannot afford electronics for college.
