College Decision Day: Inspiring Students of All Ages

My students need to be encouraged and motivated to pursue college as an option after they graduate high school. They need the constant reminder that they are capable and that we believe in them!

My Students

Our school serves K-12 students. Fifty-three percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We offer backpack food on the weekends, older students help with food pantry, and many of our Juniors and Seniors mentor younger elementary students. Regardless of what is going on in their lives, our students are resilient. The outside world can be harsh but many times I see elementary students skipping into school in the morning, middle school students being silly, and high school students removing their hats when entering the building.

Our students are diverse in many ways but all strive to be responsible, respectful and safe.

It is a model we adopted over five years ago and it still holds today. Our teachers and staff often go above and beyond to make a connection with our students knowing this will help the students academically as well as socially.

Recently, evidence shows our students work hard to better themselves academically rather than trying to compete with others. Could they be making a connection between love and learning? As a school, we will be doing our best to instill that correlation within our students as we strive to create a college going culture.

My Project

We want to use decision day not only as a recognition of our Seniors but as a means of creating excitement for ALL of our students about their own aspirations of college, apprenticeships, or world of work. To help promote that belief, during our decision day pep assembly, we will be giving t-shirts with 'college' on the front, to elementary students who are nominated by their teachers as being first generation students who are working hard in school. The notepads will be given away by Seniors, during the pep assembly, who will draw names of our 9th-11th grade students to help promote the importance of organizational skills and time management skills. The wristbands have various sayings such as 'dream big' and 'believe in yourself'. These will be given to ALL of our middle school students prior to the pep assembly to remind them they are capable and we believe in them.

We will use the items to promote a school-wide college-going culture that will have lasting effects and will make a difference in the way students feel about learning.

The goal is to use the items to help motivate our low achieving students by setting the example that while learning can be hard it will pay off in the long run. Our pep assembly will be a platform our Seniors can use to give advice to underclassmen about the importance of and rewards of doing your best in school.

We hold the belief that when students know others believe in them they will begin to believe in themselves and once this occurs, students will begin to excel. The t-shirts, notepads, and wristbands are concrete items students will visibly use during school to help promote a college-going culture and motivate them to learn.
