About My Students

Hi my name is Tanajah! I am currently a senior at The High School of Arts and Technology in New York City. Last year our governor started a scholarship to make college affordable for middle and low income families called the Excelsior scholarship. The Excelsior Scholarship, in combination with other student financial aid programs, allows students to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition-free. However for many of my classmates the cost of going away to college is still a hardship.

Room and Board are not covered by The Excelsior Scholarship. Myself as well as many of my classmates come from low income families,Many of us live in homeless shelters or are in foster care. Going away to college is a way out. It will allow us to concentrate on our studies in a better environment. These are basic things that will help us expand our minds and education.

In Their Own Words

I got this idea when I went to summer basketball camp and needed things that I did not have nor the money to go. My teachers raised money to get me things like towels and toilet trees. When going on a college tour I noticed all the things the students had and felt that I would not be able to decorate my college dorm and maybe this will make students rethink about going away to college.

Even starting this project I am taking a lead to help my classmates. I want them to know that they should not let their current status hold them down. The opportunities when going away to college will be great. It will allow us to be exposed to so much and make us better.

This project will help my classmates be able to make a better decision in choosing a college. Take out what bedding or towels I will bring and maybe it will allow them to take advantage of opportunities that they did not think they could afford. In the end it will maybe allow us to follow our dreams and stay warm while doing so.
