Mrs. Raper from Osceola AR is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 20 copies of the book "Blind Side" to use as a classroom guided reading resource.

I teach 8th grade Career Orientation which is a foundation course that uses hands-on activities and research, providing an opportunity for exploring career clusters. The students are at a point in their educational development in which it is crucial to motivate them to do their best at the high school level. The students in my career class and remediation class live in a high poverty rural area. We are a 100% free and reduced lunch charter school in which the students choose to attend in order to meet higher expectations; however, with limited experiences and enrichment opportunities, they are limited in areas of background knowledge.
Because of my students limited experiences, we need to build this background knowledge using materials they can relate to. Research shows reading is one of the best ways to create these connections. Our students are convinced they are so good at sports, they will be drafted directly to professional sports. Many of the students need the realization that playing college sports is a privilege that must be earned.
Using a classroom set of the book, The Blind Side, we can read and reflect on the perseverance of a homeless African American football player, Micheal Oher and his determination to raise his grades in order to be eligible for a college scholarship. In addition, this book will provide a character education component as we see Micheal learn to trust others as he protects and cares for them. After we read the book, we will watch the movie and compare and contrast the differences. The movie will reinforce the discussion we had about the book and provide additional comprehension.
Your donation will help students to understand a real life situation about a student much like many of them who made it out of a difficult situation. The students need to understand that college scholarships need to be earned academically with their hard work. This classroom book set will provide my class a time to look at a situation that is close to our home and our hearts. This project will be sure to provide plenty of quality discussion time for my students.
