Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my scholars develop a new skill that can be fun, emotionally fulfilling and profitable. Kids love taking pictures and I'd love to be able to teach them how to take their passion to a new level as a hobby or potential business one day.
My scholars are 7th grade girls in an urban part of Texas.
They are intelligent, passionate, and full of energy. They attend a college prep charter school that serves neighborhoods and districts with huge achievement gaps. Currently, our charter network serves K-12th grade and has a 100% college acceptance rate. Our school is changing the lives of children and giving them an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and become successful adults.
My Project
I believe that developing a hobby such as photography gives students an opportunity to express themselves and be creative. It will build their confidence and allow them to reflect on their community while seeing it from a unique perspective. They will be inspired to continue developing this craft. In addition, they will learn how to utilize a camera, edit photos online and then choose their favorite photo at the end of their enrichment course to print and display on campus. Finally, they will write about why they selected that image and write a reflective description about it.
Having a hobby that we are passionate about is so important to our health.
While not all kids are athletes, photography gives them a chance to be creative, tell stories through images, and even give back to others by capturing precious and important images of life. This is a hobby they can have for the rest of their lives. Those are are extremely talented could find photography to be profitable as well as fulfilling.
