My Students

I teach at a school that has just started a speech and debate program in the past several years. What I love about my students is how they are willing to take the risk and attempt something that many people fear more than death. They have created a classroom culture of acceptance and willingness to dig deep and share some difficult subjects in order for their speeches to truly be meaningful.

I admire my students and their bravery, excitement, and willingness to explore, and master, a difficult topic like public speaking, which is what impresses me the most about them as young people.

They truly want to reach out to the community and have their voices heard in order to help other students figure out information about their future and what it means to be a part of our school.

My Project

Our class project is inspired by Mrs. Quinto's project entitled "Brought To You By: Project Based Broadcasting," one of the winners of the Bill and Melinda Gates' "Student-Centered Learning Environment Innovation Challenge." Her winning project reinforces the idea that learning organically through project-based learning is just as important as learning and researching in a structured manner and it is our hope that we can continue similar learning and research experiences within our classroom with the integration of the requested items.

“Project based learning is a learner-centered educational method [because] learners are progressively given more and more responsibility for their own education [which] produces independent learners who can continue to learn on their own in life and in their chosen careers.”(Southern Illinois University’s School of Medicine).

Our hope is to build a mini-broadcasting studio with the necessary equipment to make it mobile and flexible enough for the needs of the audio/video demands of our classroom. The HP laptop will act as a hub for post-production where editing and revisions can take place, the Zoom H5 portable recorder will give us the flexibility to work in different spaces/areas of our school when conducting interviews or research on the go; while the MXL 990, mic stand, SD card, XLR cord, pop filter and the professional headphones will allow us to create studio-quality sound pieces. These will all provide us the necessary components for recording, editing, and storage purposes.

We are truly excited about this opportunity to initiate the exploration of the culture at our school and to begin building a mobile mini-broadcasting studio and thank you for your help in continuing to transform our classroom and school.
