Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love art which takes place in their classroom. Our half hour classes require focus and cooperation. I would like my students to explore color interaction through collage. "Derive happiness in oneself from a good day's work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us," Henri Matisse.
I teach Kindergarten through sixth grade children in a high poverty urban school.
My students are always drawing. They love to work in groups and talk about their artwork. They are extremely curious and crave new experiences. They love intense colors. They enjoy using different tools and media to create art, the messier the better!
My Project
My students will use hot and cool colors on black and white to create collage in the style of the cutouts of Henri Matisse. They will use Mod Podge to adhere their collage pieces and to create even more intense color by painting over their collage. We will reuse all scraps of paper and create frames with the mosaic pieces. The children will chose a collage theme and title, and draw a plan in pencil before beginning. They will work cooperatively to share supplies. They will explore how colors look different when placed next to or overlapping each other. They will learn cutting and pasting techniques. They will also critique their work periodically. This project will take several class periods to complete and will be displayed in the hallways.
My students will greatly benefit from the donation of these art supplies because they will be able to use bright colors to express themselves.
The completed collage projects that will be displayed in the hallways will create a happier environment and give them pride in their accomplishments.
